Old Town Vapor 10 Kayak Review

by Chris Orr

Fishing from the shoreline can get a little boring after a while, especially if you want to be a part of the action, on the water. You could get yourself a motorboat, but that’s quite an investment, and you’ll need a trailer too.

So what’s the solution? A fishing yak of course! They’re affordable, lightweight to transport and you can paddle to areas that aren’t necessarily accessible with a bigger boat or on foot.

But finding the right one for your needs could prove difficult because of the wide choice that is available.

This is where the Old Town Vapor 10 comes in. Specially designed with fishing in mind, it ticks all the relevant boxes, including stability, maneuverability, as well as comfort. There are also a few extras that’ll lure you in like the anchor trolley system and built-in skid plates.

What we like:

  • It is affordable
  • The Old Town Vapor 10 comes with a Trolley System
  • A rounded hull means it is stable and has more maneuverability
  • Can handle different water conditions
  • Fairly lightweight at 49 lbs
What we don’t like:

  • It isn’t the fastest kayak on the water
  • Doesn’t include a paddle
  • Some users have mentioned the seat can get uncomfortable after a while
  • Not enough dry storage

All the Reasons the Old Town Vapor 10 is the Kayak for You

It’s easy to be blown away by the design alone, let alone everything else it has to offer. Like the two color options: a “cloud” different shades of blue and a stunning “sunrise” colorway with hues of orange, red and yellow. To complete the look just grab your color coordinated flip-flops and boardshorts and you’re good to go.

But let’s get real. We’re seriously not recommending a kayak based on fashion accessories. Not when there is so much more to it.

Space and Comfort

It goes without saying that a fishing kayak should have a good sized cockpit. The Vapor 10 measures around 19.5 by 48 inches and has more than enough space for you to stretch your legs, or keep them on the paddle, while you are waiting for the fish to bite.

Storage Options

The Old Town Vapor 10 has more than enough storage for a day out on the water. There is a storage well that can be found in the stern, along with a bungee rigging at the bow for any extra items.

Stable and Tracks Well

As you would expect from a fishing kayak, the Vapor 10 tracks well and is stable enough, even for newbies who are still getting a feel for being on the water. We like its easy maneuverability that allows you to get in and out of usually hard-to-reach spots.

Anchor System and Trolly

There is no denying that this is one of a heck of a yak with some really impressive features. But what really stands out is the mini anchor and trolly system. It allows you to fish in one without having to worry about drifting off. You don’t get this with a lot of kayaks, and definitely not with entry-level ones.

Extra Features

The Vapor 10 is packed with additional features that you will be hard-pressed to find on most kayaks. Let’s take a closer look at what these are.

There is a tray that can hold your tackle as well as a drink (because what is fishing without it?) as well as a paddle holder, mounted rod holders and a live tank-well for extra fishing gear or bait.

You will also find a molded-in dashboard, built-in carry handles and a whole lot more.

Final Checklist

So is the Old Town Vapor 10 worth your hard earned cash? Our final checklist will tell you all you need to know.

Spacious and Stable

The compact design hides a spacious cockpit that is worth the price alone. There is more than enough room to cast your line, stretch your legs when you need to and pack extra gear for a day out on the water. The adjustable foot braces and seat, thigh pads, paddle rest and drink holder are just a few of the premium features you’ll find on this very affordable kayak.

Weight Capacity

The Vapor 10 is made with polyethylene and weighs around 49 lbs. The weight capacity, however, is approximately 325 pounds, which is impressive for any kind of kayak, let alone a 10-footer. It is easy to load onto a car or SUV, and the built-in carry handles provide you with a solid grip if you need to carry it a little further.

Maneuverability

Its compact size makes the sit-in kayak easy to maneuver on flat water, including lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers. However, if it isn’t the best choice for rapids and the short hull doesn’t do well when the wind picks up.

All in all, the Old Town Vapor 10 Kayak is an excellent choice for fishing. It has everything you could need, and then some, and it is reasonably priced. The large cockpit is suitable for the burliest of anglers, with more than enough space for the obligatory refreshments, bait, and other fishing gear.

Having said that, there are a few niggles that need to be pointed out. The drain plug’s location, for example, is a major bugbear for some, citing that it is almost impossible to position the kayak at a suitable angle to get the water out.

Also, there are complaints that after three or so hours, the seat gets a little uncomfortable, but to be fair, that is a long time to be sitting still for most people.

We have had feedback that the ‘yak isn’t fast enough on the water, but when it is being used for fishing, we don’t think this is a major flaw.

At the end of the day…

In our opinion, the Old Town Vapor 10 is a great choice for newbies as well as seasoned anglers. It has ample storage space for all your fishing gear, with some very nifty extras. It looks great on the water, and there are claims that fish literally throw themselves into the Vapor 10. Okay, maybe not, but if they did, it is entirely understandable.

Tell us your fishing tales using the Old Town Vapor 10. We want to know which features you liked, which you would change and if you could pimp your yak, what would you do?
